Terrica,

What a great story! And so well expressed and written.

I call this, "Live Simple, Give Samples."

I think we often feel we must give others the world for it to be of any value. Your story reminds us all that small measures of HEART FOOD satisfy the empty wells of those in soul thirst.

Just giving out samples in our daily lives can be so full of impact, and the lives most impacted are usually our own.

My wife and our little ones were driving downtown recently and had a similar experience. While stopping at a red light, a young homeless man that could barely walk stumbled over to our car in heavy traffic to squeegee our windshield. Knowing we were carrying no money in our wallets, we waved him off. He just smiled and said, "it's okay, I want to do it."

After he finished, my wife reached out, held his hand and found out his name. His name was Gary. She told Gary she would pray for him, today. His response: "I'll pray for you today, too."

Gary, as the light was turning red, saw our three children in the car and said with a speech impediment (non-alcoholic), "Wait, someone gave me this earlier and it's for kids."

He reached into his pocket and handed her a kids ring, searching frantically for the second one he also wanted them to have. As the light changed, he needed to get out of the middle of the road for safety reasons, so we moved on.

Gary had so little, but the samples he did give so blessed our lives beyond their monetary value. Our family will be remembering a homeless young man named Gary for a long time to come.

"Tim and Gary, may the light of God's grace shine in your hearts and fill your lives, today."

Thank you for sharing this story, and for letting God use you in Tim's life. I decided earlier this morning on a way to work on developing intimacy and vulnerability with my husband (I'm the one who struggles with this). You almost made me cry; thank you again for sharing.

:) Hi there. I'm Kirsten's friend. Several people are commenting over on her Facebook post. Just so you know, your words have changed hearts and inspired thought. I know that's not why we blog, but sometimes we need the acknowledgement that our words are not useless and wasted.

Your words? Are not useless. And your words have not been wasted.

Your husband affirmed me in affirming you. :) It hasn't inspired my affection toward him in quite the same way, but it has inspired me to continue caring...to continue being a silly emotional girl...and to own it. ;)

Thank you for sharing your heart here. I know it's a risk sometimes. I pray you'll be blessed for taking risks! Have a good day!

Wow, this just made me SOB, because I can SOOO identify with this whole situation from beginning to end. Glad to know that my husband and I are not the only ones who struggle with things like giving and how we can do it more effectively and wisely without being legalistic and not just giving out of obligation. With us, I'm also the emotional one and SO often, I too have to fight back tears when we drive through Johannesburg or other places in SA.But I'm also fortunate to have a husband who shares his heart with me and who are not caught off guard everytime I get emotional over something, but just wraps me in his arms and tells me how much he loves me. I thank God for him!!!
